Cliff Washburn walked next to his wife, Anne, down a modern street in downtown Aden, Yemen. Though they were from Indiana, Anne’s head was covered as a subservient wife. This was a volatile country where Shiite rebels clashed with foreigners as often as they did with the government.
The beard that Cliff had started to grow three weeks before their twentieth anniversary, was coming along nicely. But the carpenter and his rosy-cheeked wife were not on an ordinary anniversary vacation.
Anne laughed at a window display and Cliff feigned attention. It was hard to act natural with a Yemini agent on their heels. The “embassy escort” strolled seemingly absent-mindedly behind the couple. If Cliff didn’t know any better, he would’ve guessed the government already knew Cliff’s business in their country.
Two women with black head coverings crossed the street on their left. Anne glanced at Cliff with a knowing look. When the two women were in front of Cliff and Anne, one of the women dropped her purse, and a dozen objects scattered across the sidewalk.
Cliff acted perturbed, and turned to the Yemeni agent.
“We’d like to go see the coast,” Cliff said, blocking the agent’s view of Anne as she knelt to help the woman collect her spilled articles. “How far is it on foot?”
“You get taxi,” the agent said with a strong accent. He didn’t seem to suspect the meeting between the Americans and the two Yemeni women. “It is too hot to walk.”
“Good idea.” Cliff shook the agent’s hand. Anne dusted off her hands and stood next to him. “We’ll see you at the coast then.”
They hailed a taxi as the agent waved for his own. Cliff looked in the opposite direction. The two women were almost safely out of sight around a shop corner.
“The weather sure is nice,” Anne said in code. The hand-off had been successful. “It’s so beautiful here, I might abandon Indiana altogether!”
Cliff chuckled as they climbed into the taxi.
The Bible software—in the handle of a hairbrush—had been passed on to the Christian underground church in this covert operation. Cliff and Anne wondered what would happen if the Yemeni Muslim enforcers learned that they were losing the battle against converts to Christianity under their very noses.
