Welcome readers! This is David Telbat. Thank you for joining us today at Telbat’s Tablet. Does tax season cause you to have bad hair days?
I trust everyone is handling their tax burdens with patience and honesty. I wrote a short story to help lighten your mood and to think more kindly toward that tax machine. 😉
Tax Season and Bad Hair Days
by D.I. Telbat
Troy Baker had been a barber for twenty years when he was audited for the first time. He was furious, but felt some satisfaction when he found out that one of his customers worked in the IRS building downtown.
Barber Troy was certain that the man was to blame for Troy’s cumbersome tax troubles. It wasn’t that Troy was dishonest, but he was terrible at keeping receipts and records.
So, every time the taxman came in for a haircut, Troy made every effort to give him a bad cut. He even closed his eyes through part of the job just to ensure the taxman’s hair was uneven and patchy.
The bad haircuts went on monthly for a whole year, until tax season rolled around again. Much to Barber Troy’s surprise, he wasn’t audited this time! After a time, guilt plagued Troy to the point that he pulled the taxman aside when he came in for his next haircut.
“Since I heard you worked in the IRS building,” Troy admitted to him, “I’ve been giving you bad haircuts for a year to pay you back for last year’s audit. I thought for sure you were going to audit me again.”
“Oh, I do work in the IRS building,” the man responded, “but I’m just the janitor on the third floor.”
“What?” Troy’s shoulders slumped and he shook his head, feeling even more terrible. “Then why have you been coming in here, tolerating my lopsided haircuts this past year?”
“Honestly?” The man moved a little closer so Troy’s other customers wouldn’t hear. “I’ve been coming in here for seven years, and I’ve never received a good haircut. I thought you could use the practice.”
Have a tolerable tax season, my friends! Just stay away from that barber for a few days!
