Dear Friends, you’ve probably noticed that in all my books, the main characters hold God’s Holy Scriptures in high regard. In the COIL books, while operatives are in foreign lands, they take time during their operations to read and contemplate the words of the Bible. In The Steadfast Series, Eric Radner carries a pocket Bible, which he often uses for personal devotions as well as for sharing God’s message with others. The Bible is in the hands of all the heroes of my books, but is it really that important? By including the Bible in characters’ lives, am I being unnecessarily religious? What am I promoting?
The Bible’s Purpose
When we forget that God is changeless and eternal, the Bible might be thought of as an ancient record of meaningless tales. But when we realize that the God of the Bible is eternal, and what He declares as truth is profitable for His followers, we should instantly take notice. Truth doesn’t change over time, so what God has said is right or wrong 3,000 years ago, is right or wrong still today. The passing of time does not change the standard for holiness with our timeless, righteous God.
Within the Bible we find God’s words to man, a record of God’s dealings with man, and man’s rebellion and/or pursuit of God. What God told His chosen men to write down, they did. One of the many ways we know the Bible is true is the manner in which these inspired men admitted their own flaws and failures, in contrast to the great and transcendent God for whom they were recording.
Only men inspired by God would ignore their own qualities to record very plainly the qualities of God. The heroes of the Bible were not great men, by the world’s standards. So we know these men were not writing the books of the Bible for any worldly reason, but for some heavenly reason, which God gradually reveals through them. One passage describes that reason very aptly in II Timothy 3:16-17. The verses tell us the Scriptures have come from God Himself, and they profit every man, woman, and child of faith—to live effectively for God in this chaotic world. Without the Scriptures, we could not be equipped to live right.
The Reason I Include the Bible
Since I know the truth of the Bible really and truly changes people’s lives from the inside out, I cannot write novels without including the example of heroes and heroines relying on God’s Word. Corban Dowler of The COIL Series memorized Scripture so that, even when he doesn’t have the Bible on his person, he has the words of the Bible in his heart and mind. He can recite it to himself or to others. Corban knows that the truth of the Bible keeps his eyes on the things that matter most.
As we read my newest series of novels called the Last Dawn Trilogy, we will find that I continue to hold the Bible in high regard to correct and counsel Levi Caspertein, the son of Titus. Does man have it within himself to discern good from evil without God? No, and therefore, men and women of God crave the life-giving words of Scripture to walk truly, live effectively, and love sincerely.
It is my prayer that the characters in my books are not seen as unnecessarily religious, but as champions of humanity who know they need God’s very presence every minute to sustain them now and forever. May we be such champions as well!
