Now, about today’s short story— Every day of the Christian journey is plagued by difficulty. Though a believer is securely in God’s possession, we may still be distracted along our journey Home. Here is a little allegory of the Christian walk and our Father’s steadfast love. See you on the next page!—David Telbat
For Now You Must Endure
by D.I. Telbat
Andrew Bartholomew Leever staggered on the steep mountain trail. The rain stung his eyes as his feet slipped on the muddy path. The day was gray and dim, but he could still clearly see the cliff on his left.
“Father!” Andrew called out. “Where are You?”
“I am here, my son,” a voice like thunder sounded from up the path.
Through the rain, Andrew could not see his father, but his voice was clear when he spoke. The stormy torrent seemed to veil the very presence of his father, but every time Andrew called to him, his father responded.
“Father, why don’t you show yourself?” Andrew asked. He fell to his knees and cut his hand on a jagged rock. Thorny bushes on the slope ripped at his jacket. “Don’t you see I am walking with difficulty?”
“Yes, but you are walking. The reason I do not show myself is so you may learn to stay on the path as you listen to my voice. But I am here.”
Andrew rose to his feet, wavering for a moment on the edge of the precipice. Through the storm, he spotted a nearby sign with an arrow pointing down a steep grade. The sign read, “Shortcut to Pleasure Valley!”
“Father, why can’t I go down there? I hear laughter and happiness coming from below.”
“They laugh and delight only as they fall, my son,” his father said. “But once they hit the bottom, they will laugh no longer. They will wish they had stayed on the path and followed my voice.”
“But the path is so difficult, Father!”
“Your ancestor—the first traveler on this path—is the one who chose to make this path a tragedy. You were one of his offspring, but now, you are my child.”
“Have others gone this way and resisted the attraction of pleasure in the valley below?”
“Yes, many others have trusted in my voice up this path. My own unique son walked this path, and through him, I have known and experienced your same challenges and temptations. But my first son succeeded by my strength. Let his triumph inspire you now. Keep climbing.”
“Will it always be this difficult, Father? Forever?”
“No, not forever, only until your body fails, and then I will carry you home the rest of the way. In that day, you will no longer be tormented by the taunts of the valley below, nor will storms harass your journey toward Me, for soon you will be with Me.”
“I want to be with You now, Father. Take my pains and heartache away.”
“Soon, my child. For now, you must endure, and be encouraged that you tread the very ground on which my first son tread. He is with Me now, and soon, you will be with him. Do you believe this?”
“I do believe, Father, though I have a little doubt.”
“The journey is meant to shatter any doubt, my son. Come. Come to Me.”
Andrew clenched his teeth and leaned into the wind. Onward he climbed, the guiding promises of his Father in his ear, calling him home.
Prayer Prompt: Pray for believers in North Korea. BTJ reports: “As imports into North Korea get shut down, Bibles are still going in, and still find their way to hungry hearts, to comfort believers who have kept their faith under unimaginable pressure… Yes, the situation in North Korea is bad. War looms, food runs out, God’s people are always in danger. But the power of the gospel is making cracks in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it completely.” Pray that God will touch hearts and lives in this closed country. It isn’t closed to Him.
