Dear Reading Friends, thanks for joining us today for my author reflection, “Is God Worth all the Drama?” No one can deny that there is much drama (activity, division, headache, strife) within and around the Christian life, when lived faithfully. Whether you’re reading the COIL novels, or the Steadfast novellas, you may notice I intentionally portray strife in the lives of our heroes. Why? Because being a Christian in the real world is full of strife. That’s our reality. But I’ve found that God is worth all the drama!
Heroes or Zeroes
Many of you know our hero, Corban Dowler (from The COIL Series). He’s insightful, skilled, and resourceful. Yet, he continues to place himself in situations on behalf of others that seem to risk his own comfort, peace, finances—and his very life. His life would be a lot easier if he just gave up his faith in Jesus Christ. Why does he continue?
Then there’s The Steadfast Series (with Books 5 & 6 coming spring 2018). Eric Radner is inclined to retreat from all human contact, but he continues to present himself to be used by God to rescue, preserve, and counsel others. We might think that Eric would be a lot happier in life if he simply gave up the application of steadfast faith. Why does this hero continue for God if there’s so much drama and strife?
The Faithful get More of God
There are several other books in which I’ve presented a unifying theme: those who are faithful to God, regardless of the difficult circumstances or the risks, receive much spiritual contact with God. This is why the cost to self doesn’t register on the gauge of Christian heroes living daily for Jesus. In the midst of the strife, they draw closer to God. That’s the payoff. The whips of the world are harsh, but the embrace of Jesus is infinitely more comforting.
So, you and I are left with this question: Is God worth all the drama? Is He worth siding against the world’s methods and opinions? Well, when we measure the value of the fickle and fading world’s ideas against the promises from God’s Word, we are left with a simple, enduring faith in God. We get more of God the closer we cling to Him. That’s a big YES!—God is always worth the drama. Let’s stick with Him!
