Greetings, Reading Friends and New Subscribers! This is David Telbat with an Author Reflection today. Do you hate the spiritual darkness of sin that creeps up and threatens the Light that you have? Recently, I was meditating on how deeply I should hate such sin in my own life. What could this darkness be likened to that I could better understand the aversion I should have to sin?
As a writer, who has just finalized editing the new sequel to Distant Contact, these kinds of exercises are not only helpful spiritually, but they also prepare me to embed a spiritual dimension into the novels I write. Here is one likeness I came up with.
The Deepest, Blackest Sea
If the darkness of sin were likened to the deepest, blackest sea, then humans have no business being there. In that darkness, the pressure compresses and destroys life. Breathing is impossible since there is no air. And our eyes would be blinded in the depths where no light from the surface can reach.
And then there are the creatures that lurk in the darkness. They are haunting terrors borne in hidden canyons that linger to gnaw and tear and swallow.
This is sin—a place that should be completely foreign to a Christian.
The Highest Light of Christ
If you are a Christian, then you remember where you came from. There was a time that the suffocation, loneliness, and blindness of sin made you tremble in hopelessness. But this darkness is no longer your experience. Your nature and position have been changed.
Now, we are urged by our Savior to flee the depths of sin and surge ever higher toward the Light. In the Light of God’s forgiveness, we can now breathe for the first time. Without the pressures of guilt we can freely follow and walk with Christ. In His presence and closeness, we aren’t alone or invisible. And with His Light shining in our lives, we are no longer blinded to sin’s destruction, and we can see the path of peace before us.
The cold of darkness may have left its frostbite marks on our souls, but God has rescued us from the depths of the sea of sin, and transferred us into the rays where His Son shines. May we live in the Light as He is in the Light!
See you on your knees!
