Welcome, Reader Friends! This is celebration time for us because today is our Blogoversary, and marks two years that we’ve been blogging on Telbat’s Tablet with David Telbat’s Christian fiction! Thank you so much for joining us on our adventure! [UPDATE: This interview was taken in Feb 2013. I’ll let you do the math. ;)]
We thought we’d do something quite different today and give you a treat! We asked Melanie of Christian Bookshelf Reviews for an interview. And she said YES! Be sure to check out her great book review site after our interview. So let’s get started!
Interview: Melanie of Christian Bookshelf Reviews
Dee: Welcome Melanie! We are honored to have you as our guest here on Telbat’s Tablet. Thank you for taking time to answer our questions.
Melanie: Thank you for having me. 🙂
Dee: You run what looks to be a very successful book review site called Christian Bookshelf Reviews. Were you a reviewer before you founded this site?
Melanie: No. I didn’t begin reviewing books until after I started Christian Bookshelf Reviews. I wanted a blog where I could share my thoughts on books I read and maybe receive books for review. It’s become way more than I imagined and I’ve even “met” some other readers who I now consider friends.
Dee: That’s the wonderful thing about having your kind of site—there are so many like-minded readers to meet that obviously love what you do.
So, how long ago did you start this journey?
Melanie: It’ll be two years February 4th (my blogoversary)… can hardly believe it’s been that long! Time has flown. 🙂
Dee: Indeed, it has. Congratulations! We have that in common—I blogged for the first time on Telbat’s Tablet on Feb 1st, two years ago also! Readers can find a link to your Blogoversary Party after this interview.
What is something that you learned that you didn’t expect when you got started on your exciting reviewing endeavor?
Melanie: Congratulations to you, too! One thing I learned is that authors are just like everyone else and most are super friendly. 🙂
Dee: That’s nice to know! 🙂 There are so many great Christian authors out there. I’m sure your favorites must change all the time. What is your favorite genre and who is your favorite author right now and why?
Melanie: I’m very eclectic in the books I read/enjoy, but my favorite genre is suspense/thriller with historical romance a close second. As for authors… I have so many favorites! I don’t think I can choose just one, so I’ll list my top two right now and why:
Lisa T. Bergren – LOVE her River of Time series… one of my all-time favorites. [Find them at Amazon, iTunes, Barnes & Noble, and read Melanie’s River of Time book reviews here, here, here, here, and here.]
Robin Parrish – I’ve read most/all of his books and have enjoyed each one, especially Vigilante (favorite read of 2011) [Find it at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.] and Corridor (favorite read of 2012). [Find it at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Click the title links to read Melanie’s reviews.]
Dee: Ahh, thank you for those! Our readers may just want to check those out!
It’s just not fair that the Lord seems to have given you more hours in the day than I received! 😉 How do you manage to read so many books each week? (Are you a speed-reader?) Sometimes I see on your site that it seems you are reading several books at the same time. Are you really able to do that?
Melanie: Well, I’m not a speed-reader. The amount I’m able to read depends on how much reading time I have that week… some weeks I’m not able to read much. 🙁
I prefer not to read more than one fiction book at the same time, but lately I’ve been doing that – mainly because of buddy reads, which are really fun. 🙂
Dee: I’ve seen that you are quite active on GoodReads. Could you tell our readers what GoodReads is about if they haven’t been there before?
Melanie: Basically it’s a place to share what you’re reading and to connect with other readers. I love it! It’s one of my favorite sites to visit. 🙂
Dee: I know you share your reviews on GoodReads, too. Do you share your reviews on any other social media sites?
Melanie: I post links to my reviews on Twitter and Facebook.
Dee: Great! That gives readers several places to find you and your reviews!
Oh! I don’t want to forget to ask you this—how do you receive your books to review? And do you get paid for your service of reviewing?
Melanie: Most of the books I receive for review are from authors and publishers. I do not get paid to review any book and the thoughts I share are my own – if I don’t like a book, I’ll say that. 🙂
Dee: Well, thank you for providing this great service for readers, Melanie! You have reviewed two of David Telbat’s eBooks in the past. [read Melanie’s review of Dark Liaison and Dark Hearted.] He has the third book in the COIL Series, Dark Rule, about to be published. Would you be willing to review it when it comes out?
Melanie: Definitely! I enjoyed the first two books and look forward to finding out what happens next in the characters’ lives.
Dee: Great! We’ll be in touch with that in the near future!
Melanie, we thank you so much for taking time to spend with us! It’s been a pleasure to get to know you a little better, and to see what you do behind the scenes.
Is there anything else about your site or reviewing that you’d like our readers to know, including ways they can follow you?
Melanie: Thanks to everyone that visits – it means a lot to me that you actually like my blog and stop by. Regarding reviewing – don’t give up and strive to do your best. I hope you find my reviews helpful. 🙂
