I read Soul Defenders: The Black Orchids, a novel about spiritual warfare, in the span of two days. The first chapter gripped me with just the right amount of detail to get the imagination going, then the book really took off! The dimension of demons and angels shifts with the human dimension so naturally, it wasn’t strange at all to find what sinister strategies the demons were working alongside wicked humans.
Spiritual warfare is hard to describe as it certainly exists—because it is beyond our finite minds, but Carol Van Atta gives us a taste of the likely in this story of dedicated Christians and stealthy vessels of Satan’s minions. It did get a little graphic in spots, but necessarily so to portray the gravity of sin and its “oozing consequences,” as the author might say. And the description of angels and demons are well done, each with their own personality.
I benefited from the author’s handle of Scripture, applied appropriately to modern temptations and struggles. My prayer life is indeed strengthened with this underlying perspective in mind, according to Ephesians 6:12. The novel was comparable to Peretti’s more technical writing, where God’s agents are present whenever praying Christians are active and trusting.
A good read with strong characters. And that book cover—wow!
