Book Review by D.I. Telbat
This startling true story of everyday faith through an injustice in the court system was an emotional ride for me. Beginning with chapter one, I found this story intense. I had to close the book several times just to settle my nerves and pray for God’s justice today—since mankind is so faulty.
Author Deb Brammer walks us through the first minutes when Mary Weaver was accused of murdering a child she was babysitting. After only a few chapters into the book, I was caught wondering how often similar false accusations have occurred against others. Mrs. Brammer eventually discusses this question and gives us some facts to consider.
The research in this book was personal and respectful, involving so many lives that were touched—and so many lives that touched Mary Weaver, who endured such horrific burdens. What an example of fellowship, of forgiveness, and of faith in this ride on a bullet train through the court system and its potential imperfections. How important it is to rely on God, the only Perfect Judge in every matter of life, concerning the present as well as eternity.
Whether the author intended this or not, a few days after completing the book, I realized another lesson I’d learned from Mary Weaver’s story. Sometimes in life, justice isn’t the priority—not from man, anyway. We may be unhappy with unreasonable results in court rulings or with laws that seem to afflict more than protect. But a Christian’s priority and foundation doesn’t change. Our priority is to remain faithful and to stand on the foundation of Christ our Lord, no matter the circumstances.
Thank you for sharing this story, Deb Brammer, and for your continued work overseas. The book was well-written, and I recommend this read for people who seek to witness faith in action when all seems lost. God doesn’t abandon His children, whether they remain in prison or not. Praise Him!
