Dear Reading Friend, this is David Telbat with an Author Reflection. One of the messages in the COIL books is that God cares about believers who are suffering and persecuted throughout the world. This truth is important for you and me to recognize because it shows that no matter what we are going thru, we are ultimately safe and secure in His hands.
Chaos and Crisis
Between The Steadfast Series and the two COIL Series of books, we have seen that God’s people face the same struggles as everyone else in the world. Sometimes, depending on their level of commitment to the Lord, Christians will even face more hardship than the rest of the world!
It is not realistic to assume that coming to Christ is a pass to experience what hardships are standard for those who were born into this fallen world. The whole idea of this creation now being fallen means that it is less than what it was set up to be by God. This creation was originally perfect and good, but when sin entered the world, it changed everything.
The difference between Christians and other people on this earth is not that Christians are better people or more deserving of love or good treatment from God. No! And that’s not taught in the Bible, either! Christians are just people—as unworthy of God’s goodness as the next person. However, the difference comes into focus (between believers and nonbelievers) simply by whether an individual chooses to trust in self, or to trust in God.
Chaos and crises will circle the globe and touch each person’s life at some point, as will death. But on Whom a person relies to understand and endure through chaos and crisis—yes, that is what separates Christians from all others.
Peace and Safety
If you listen to politicians, or even to some evangelists, then you hear what the prophet Jeremiah was dealing with in his day. False teachers deceptively proclaim that peace and safety will come by some earthly means or pursuit. That’s just not the way God’s people enjoy peace and safety. Jesus Christ and His followers have been persecuted and harassed by the world. That doesn’t sound like the peace and safety being offered by false prophets today!
But there is peace and safety for us—just not while in this world. There is a world to come. This is why I write. This is why we must be willing to stand for Christ and face strife and hardship and tragedy in our lives. We are believers. What do we believe? That peace and safety are found in faith in Jesus Christ alone.
In His arms—the forgiving arms of God Himself—we can realize the peace for our conscience. And safety? Yes, Christ Himself assured that those who believe in His gift of life would receive eternal life. That sounds pretty safe to me—since He alone conquered death. What greater safety is there than to trust in the One who came as a Man and conquered the grave?
In these trying times of politics and nuclear deals, protests and racism, trends and entertainment, fires and hurricanes . . . is our God missing? No, He is not missing! He is still present. The fallen world has always had only chaos and crisis to offer, and those who live for this world will be burdened by its disasters. But the eternal life that is found in Jesus Christ gives believers stability through all the ups and downs, and ultimately, we will be found in God’s presence forever. But our hope is in the next life, not in this one.
I encourage you to look to our constant Lord and Savior through times of uncertainty. Recognize the problems with this world, but don’t look too closely, or this world will become an unnecessary burden. Let us keep our eyes on the One who faced crisis, and overcame it! Consider Jesus’ words in one of my favorite Scripture verses:
These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NASB)
