Happy 4th of July, American Reader Friends! David here. As a reader myself, I enjoy reading about behind-the-scenes in the lives of other writers. I recently read John Bunyan’s biography, author of Pilgrim’s Progress, and was fascinated to learn that he created his characters based on real people he crossed, particularly hypocritical Christians.
Well, my own inside scoop is much less intriguing, but I learned so much from one event that I made a note in my notebook to share it with you one day.
One of my novels now available to you, when I was undergoing the final edit process, was missing page 228. I ransacked my workspace looking for this important page—the beginning of a new chapter! But it was nowhere to be found. (I prefer to write my first drafts by hand, btw.)
After some time, and under pressure of a deadline, I conceded to rewriting page 228, even though it had been months since I had first written it. The book was finally completed, and sent to my editor, and that book is now one that many of you have read.
The moral of the story? The Creator of the universe, our Sovereign Lord, is not outside our lives or out of touch with the details we feel to be important, particularly when we are on a mission to please Him with our gifts. He is not far away even in the part of our lives that we feel is “missing.” God is redirecting us in a way that we must trust is better than our original plan.
The book that needed page 228 rewritten ended up hitting Amazon’s top 100 bestseller lists several times, and many of you wrote that the story touched or challenged you. What if that page hadn’t been rewritten? Would it still have been the story it became? We’ll never know.
I’m not making light of larger “missing pieces” in our lives; I’m only making a point. We can’t explain why we miss out on some moments or things, but we can trust our loving Lord that He is working all things out for us. (Rom. 8:28)
Now, where did I put that page 229?! 😉
See you on the next page!
P.S. The missing page belonged to Dark Hearted, Book 2 in the COIL Series, btw.
