Greetings, Reading Friends! This is David Telbat with an Author Reflection on, “Belief Precedes Behavior: Road to Steadfast Faith.” Steadfast Book Five and Book Six are about to be released together! UPDATE: SF5 is NOW on Amazon here! And SF6 is on Amazon here! These chronicles of Eric Radner’s steadfast faith in the midst of America’s Last Days show us Christ-like behavior and character of a man of God.
Even with the flaws I’ve designed Eric Radner to have, he’s still a pretty amazing guy! His speech is gracious, he’s patient during trials, and he counts his blessings before he counts life’s problems. With the exception of living in a futuristic, fictional mountain range in Wyoming, is Eric Radner’s approach to life attainable for us? How might we be able to think, act, and speak like him through our own daily challenges?
What do we believe?
The Bible presents the opportunity to all people to receive the gift of salvation and to live a sanctified (set apart) life. The Word of God is the same for all people. The same facts in the same Book span the world, offering the same gift and the same future to all people. So why do we who claim the name of Christ sometimes seem so different from the world in our character and behavior?
It comes down to what truth (facts) we believe. The facts we hold to in life will shape our lives. If I am told my house is burning down, and I believe that report, then I will behave accordingly. If I am told I’m driving the wrong way up a one-way street, and I believe that road sign, then I should take action immediately by turning around.
The life we lead
The principle is this: the truth you believe is the life you will lead. Think of belief and faith like a pair of eyes. Whatever you gaze at, you will wander toward. The longer you look, the farther you will go in that direction.
For example, if you believe in a mighty God who is in control (sovereign) of this world, then your behavior will reflect it, maybe by the way you worry less about the big and small things in life.
Another example: if you believe you are indeed forgiven for your sins as the Bible reveals, then you will try to live life without the burdens of guilt and shame of the past. What we believe is how our life follows, so what we choose to believe is very important!
The road to steadfast faith
Although Eric Radner isn’t that special, he still seems pretty amazing—like a Special Forces Christian in the fictional last days. He’s just a regular guy, so why does he seem so exceptional? It may be because he submits to the truth of the Bible, and bases his life on those truths. He knows that his behavior will follow his faith in the facts, so he’s careful to keep his faith aimed squarely at true facts. That is steadfast faith. Belief precedes behavior.
When we consider our own behavior or attitude about life’s woes, we may not like what we see. But we can change. We can open the Word of God more faithfully, on a daily basis, and consider prayerfully the Scriptures that mold our character. Our target is the set of truths that God has preserved for us in the Bible. We can pray, “This is Truth from You, God. I believe this Truth is for me to live more like Jesus. I will trust You to work this Truth into my inner being.”
This is why I say Eric Radner isn’t that special. It’s the Truth from God that is actually special, and life-changing, and behavior-altering. But we must grab onto these Truths by faith, and our behavior will follow along naturally. This is the road to steadfast faith.
