Dear Reading Friends and New Subscribers, This is David Telbat with a new author reflection. Today’s political climate in our nation is scorching. The antics of political rivals, as part of the establishment or not, are far more sinister and complex than I could formulate in a COIL novel! The characters in our nation’s story are stranger than fiction, we might say.
But this present political situation isn’t new to Satan’s strategy to distract Christians from their principle focus on Jesus Christ. While men and women claw their way toward a “glorious position” in D.C., God is still intent on showing us that His glory is beyond this world’s struggles. Are we paying attention to Him?
The Plot and the Characters
The political plot right now is just like it was in the days before Jesus was crucified. The people on top were trying to solidify and strengthen their political situation. They didn’t want anyone stepping on their established order to control the minds of the people or infringe on their wealth. They killed the Christ for a better place in the world: ‘“If we let Him go on like this, all men will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.’ …So from that day on they planned together to kill him.” (John 11:48,53 NASB)
The characters in our nation’s story today are no less blind to the end-game that God has designed. Today, the players strategize to rule the minds and gain prestige and power in this world. Oh, the small and temporary pursuits of so many! But God is keeping His message the same. He’s still on top—always has been and always will be. His way is the only way to enlightenment, perfection, and salvation. While people scramble for the best seats, God is pointing His finger at the clock of mortality, and the only door to eternal life: Jesus Christ.
The COIL Connection
As shameless and embarrassing as this political race continues to be, the Bible tells us to pray for and be mindful of the authorities over us. But that doesn’t mean we compromise in obedience to the Lord, or approve of a candidate’s tactics or policies promoting immorality. In this dash for presidency, the whole nation is riveted and waiting on the result, but COIL books help us remember a more subtle yet much more profound, and perhaps catastrophic, race.
Political twists and turns aren’t included in COIL novels. I sometimes illustrate how a political antagonist goes after a humble servant-agent of God. We find in COIL the example of never allowing the lines in our minds to be crossed—between temporal and eternal pursuits. The Christian perspective is maintained by COIL (though imperfect) characters as they see the pieces of the Bible falling into prophetic place, and they keep their hearts and actions focused on Jesus Christ. The COIL attitude is simple: glorify God by serving others.
An Eternal Perspective
There is a final day coming, and the pursuits of every person will come before the throne of God. Those whose hearts have been poured out for earthly status and position will receive such painful emptiness for eternity. They are sowing now what they will reap later. We are all on earth to prepare for eternity.
In contrast to earthly status, the Christian has taken a knee at the feet of Jesus Christ. We have gazed beyond the monuments of great leaders on earth, and look toward another Kingdom that will not melt away. Our Leader has been talking about triumph over death for millenniums, while proud men squabble over a few years of spotlight in front of media mockers. Our perspective is heavenly, toward a King who lives and saves forever. I pray we’re not caught up in the temporal plots of earthly characters!
See you on your knees!
