(More Than Just) A Fool In a Red Suit:
Adventures of a Christian Santa
by Clay Conboy
Review by D.I. Telbat
Length: 127 pgs
This is a wonderful book about a man who used his role of playing Santa to share the love of Christ and warm the hearts of young and old alike. Its 127 pages are filled with unforgettable moments of a man who dedicated himself to making sure children as well as adults knew the true meaning of Christmas: Jesus Christ.
I was especially touched by Clay Conboy’s compassion for pregnant mothers. All the money made from Santa visits was given to the pregnancy center, particularly because these young mothers chose not to have abortions. When you read some of his many cute stories, you’ll see that those brief moments Santa spent with youngsters were payment enough for him!
My favorite story was about one Santa visit where he’d performed his official duties in a household, then he came upon a woman off to the side. In talking to her, he discovered she had cancer. Conboy prayed with the woman, giving her something Santa couldn’t give her, but something that Jesus could: true hope and peace. There are other stories as well about this man who dressed up every season, grew out his naturally-white beard, and loved others with Jesus’ love.
From page one, I was grinning. The tidbits of advice for other prospective Santas was also insightful, but I think the true treasure of this book is in his Christian creativity during visits, and in his thoughtful responses to the silly things children say. The latter half of the book is as good as the first.
I recommend this book for anyone looking for a comfortable read that will warm your heart and make you want to pass that warmth on to others. (I’ve been talking about this book with others for several days now.)
I learned a lot about playing Santa and how Christ can indeed be emphasized in this way. Conboy broke through barriers for Jesus Christ by wearing that red suit. Year after year, this man as Santa was no fool.
I give this delightful book 5 stars!
