Dear Reader Friends, Thank you for joining us today for David Telbat’s three fictional letters to COIL written by fictional persecuted believers. These are representative of what happens in our world today. We hope the letters remind us all to pray for our suffering brothers and sisters in Christ.
Letter to COIL from a Chinese Boy
Dear COIL Prayer Warriors,
I am just a boy in China’s Huashan Middle School. A few months ago, I was expelled from school because I admitted to an administrator that I am a Christian. I was at the top of my class, but I was sent home anyway.
We received many letters from your people in Europe and America. They said they were praying that God would use my status to reach others for Christ.
Within a few days, school administrators came to my home and invited me to return to school. They said there was too much pressure from other countries, and I was to be welcomed back to school. My parents assure me this is a gift from God, and I agree.
Please continue to pray for Chinese believers. There is still much persecution, but my parents say where there are signs of persecution, there are signs of the hand of God.
Letter to COIL from a Pastor in Sri Lanka
Dear COIL Agency,
You know me as Pastor Solomon. You smuggled my daughter off the island two years ago when Jathika Hela Urumaga Buddhists threatened our lives here in Sri Lanka.
In the last two years, my congregation has grown smaller. Four months ago, my church in Koswatta was burned with me in it, but I escaped without many injuries. I do not wish to leave this island, but I fear I must relocate secretly.
I need your help as my contacts in Colombo and Sri Jayewardenepura have been compromised or jailed. Contact me through the regular channels.
Be with God as He is with us.
Letter to COIL from an Imprisoned Pastor in Turkey
Dear Fellow Christians,
I have lived in Silivri, Turkey, one hour west of Istanbul, my whole life. Two years ago, after much study with foreign missionaries, I became a Christian, welcoming the peace of Jesus Christ into my life.
Today I sit in a prison, accused of insulting Turkishness and Islam. I am not aware of how I insulted these principles, but I am guilty of sharing how God has changed my hard heart and my eternal destination.
I am not sure who knows I have been arrested, so I send this letter through my appointed defense attorney, hoping it reaches someone who can spread the word to pray for me.
Surely, I have lost my job at the cotton factory now, and my rent was due two weeks ago, so I may be homeless if I am not sentenced to prolonged custody. I have been accused of everything from armed resistance to conspiracy against the Turkish government. Sadly, in my second interrogation, my own Bible was torn into pieces in front of me.
I know conditions will grow worse for all Christians in Turkey and elsewhere. Perhaps I have been arrested to make others aware of that danger. Praise God for preserving me thus far.
